OLDEST RESIDENT OF MILLARD COUNTY DIES
Mr. Baldwin Harvey Watts of this place died at 8:30 a.m., Dec 2nd. Death was due to complications of flu and old age.

He was born near the the town Raymond, Hinds Co, Mississippi, April 10, 1835. In 1842 he moved with his parents to Nauvoo from there they moved to Council Point on the bank of the Missouri River in 1946.

They remained there here until the spring of 1850. On June 4 of this year he in company with his parents and several hundred other Mormons started for Utah, arriving in the Great Salt Lake basin on the sixth of September. He and his parents located on the Weber river about five miles south of Ogden.

In the fall of 1853 he went to Southern California, returning the following fall.

On the second of May 1855, he with 26 other other men was called to the Oregon territory, where they arrived on the 16th of June of the same year.

While here they helped to erect a fort called Lemhi. He returned to his home that fall and was married to Barbara Jane Levi. In the spring of 1857 he returned to Fort Lemhi and while there the indians attacked the fort driving away about 300 head of cattle and horses, also killing two men.

President Thos. Smith of that expedition called on Mr. Watts and Bernard Shaw to deliver the Express to Pres. Brigham Young. They made the trip in seven days, suffering severe hardships due to the extreme cold and deep snow on the high mountain passes.

President Young sent 300 men under the command of Col. Cunningham to the rescue of the men at Ft. Limhi. Mr. Watts was sent back to Ft. Lemhi with ten men to notify Col. Cunningham to discontinue the mission. On the return trip Mr. Watts with nine others was sent in advance of the main body with the express to Pres. Young.

On a small stream called Bannock Creek the advance was attacked by the Indiana who killed one man, Billie Lake and wounded three others, also taking 17 head of their horses so that the men had to complete their journey on foot.

Joining his wife at North Ogden, they in company with others moved to Springville where they lived until July 1865 when they returned to Ogden.

Mr. Watts moved to Kanosh in Nov 1867 and on April 6, 1874 he was called on a mission to England. After fulfilling this mission he returned to Kanosh where he has since resided.

Mr. Watts is credited with being the last survivor to have known the prophet Joseph Smith. He was also the oldest resident in Millard county.

He was married to his second wife, Emma Whedon at Salt Lake City, Utah, April 10, 1876.

He is survived by the following children by his first marriage: C. W. Watts, Mrs. Jacob Hopkins, H.F. Watts, Mrs. L.E. Barney all of Kanosh.

By his second marriage he is survived by: John A. Watts, Robert Watts, Mrs. Hyrum Iverson all of Kanosh, Mrs. Erastus Iverson of American Fork and Jed Watts of Leamington.

There are 59 grandchildren, 58 great grand children; also two brothers, John watts of St Anthony, Idaho, Robert Watts of Ogden and one sister, Eliza Belnap of Hooper.
