Agnus Miller (Easton)

March 18, 1838 - October 5, 1924

Agnes Miller Easton was born in Rutherglen, Lanark, Scotland on the 18th of March 1838. She was the 7th child of Charles Stewart and Mary McGowan Miller.

In 1848, her parents joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in their native land of Scotland.

Within the next three years, Charles, Mary and their 11 children made preparations to join with the Saints in Utah. They made it as far as St. Louis, Missouri. There her father worked mining coal to make enough money to continue their journey west to Utah.

From June 22nd to July 4th, 1849, her mother, father and two brothers contracted cholera and died. Agnes was just 11 years old. Agnes's older siblings took over the task of parenting, as well as the job of preparing for the journey West. Her oldest sister, Mary, was 23. She being the oldest, it became her lot to become the mother of her younger siblings. The youngest was John who was only 2 1/2 years old.

Quote from John's history: "We left St. Louis in the spring with the same four faithful oxen that had hauled the coal. We all came in one wagon, eleven of us including my sister's husband, Robert Easton and his daughter (by a former marriage).

"The first house that we lived in was in the First Ward and it was built of adobe, the rafters or ridge-poles were of red pine and the roof was made out of dirt. In a heavy rain, when the poles began to crack, we would all run out and jump into the wagon box. In 1851, we moved down into the Sixth Ward."

By 1855, John's history says: "Three of my sisters were already living in Cedar City." They were: Agnes, Mary and Ellen. My brother-in-law, Robert Easton, had raised some corn, squash, wheat and a few pigs. We wintered with the Robert Easton family. One could stand in the door yard and watch the coyotes play under the cedars in the moon-light, not a mile away. They were many in number, and the night was filled with their howling until we could not sleep. Three or four of them could make enough noise to sound like a hundred or more.

Agnes's oldest sister, Mary, had married Robert Easton in 1850. It seems logical that Agnes must have lived with Mary and Robert because 3 days after her 19th birthday, she too married Robert on the 21st of March, 1857. Robert was 17 years Agnes's senior. The three of them made their home in Greenville, Beaver County, Utah.

Taken from the Find a Grave Web Site. Agnes was born in Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, Scotland, daughter of Charles Stewart Miller and Mary McGowan Miller. The Miller family joined the LDS (Mormon) Church in Scotland in 1846, and emigrated to America in 1848. Agnes' parents and two of her brothers died in the great cholera epidemic of 1849 in St. Louis. The orphaned children crossed the plains to Utah in 1850. The 1850 census in Great Salt Lake County, Deseret Territory, shows David Miller, 23, occupation "collier", James Miller, 21, Margaret Miller, 16, Agness Miller, 14, Jane Miller, 12, Elizabeth Miller, 10, Ellen Miller, 8, and John Miller, 5 (all born in Scotland). Next door was Robert "Eastman" ( Easton), 28, occupation "miner", and his wife Mary (Miller) "Eastman", and children Jennette, 3, and Robert, 1.

Agnes became a plural wife of Robert Easton on March 21, 1857 in Greenville, Beaver, Utah. They had 9 children: Mary Elizabeth, Margaret Agnes, David James, Charles Robert, George Miller, John, William Joseph, Rosetta Jane, and Lorenzo Pratt Easton.

Agnes outlived her husband by many years. She is buried in Greenville, Beaver Co., Utah.
