Spanish Fork and Gunnison in Battle of Losers, by Brent Goates

            The new look in Utah Class “B” basketball, Beaver vs. BY High, gets an appealing showing tonight in the finals of the state high-school hoopla tournament. Neither school has come this close to a state casaba title before. The pennant fight begins at 9:00 p.m. at the University of Utah Fieldhouse.

            BY High reached the finals in the same manner the Wildcats have “lived” through two preceding rounds, a narrow two-point margin over Gunnison. Beaver, likewise, had a squeeze to slip in ahead of Spanish Fork, in a 26 – 23 thriller.

            In fact, almost every game written into the books yesterday was one of those breath-taking finishes. One game produced a one-point victory and four were won by two points.

            Wasatch stalled out a 35-34 triumph over Murray to gain the right to meet Pleasant Grove tonight for fourth and seventh place. The Vikings were a meager 30- 28 winner from a very good Monroe club.

            Park City won a berth in tonight’s consolation finals be reason of an overtime victory over speedy Cedar City, 37 – 35. The Miners will play North Emery tonight for fifth and eighth places. The Rangers were the only aggregation yesterday to win in a walk away, defeating Roosevelt, 45 – 31.

Pressure Wins

Coach Dave Crowton’s “Y” High cagers continued a phenomenal row of pressure victories last night. Winners over Snow and Wasatch in the first two rounds, both in overtime periods, the Wildcats showed once more they possessed heart and poise to fight off a spectacular rally by Gunnison. The record might even go back to include a final Alpine Division game with American Fork, which the ‘Cats’ likewise won in an overtime period to qualify for the tournament.

The Provo school record speaks loud enough to establish Young High as the favorites tonight, but the Wildcats are playing a Beaver Quint which has twice pulled the same type contests out of the fire in the final minutes.
