Elsie Merle Shipp was born in Beaver City, Utah on November 20, 1912. Her parents were Ernest Alexander Shipp and Irene "Elsie" Gale. Elsie married Porter Authel Martin on July 14, 1934 in Parowan, Iron County, Utah. Elsie and Thel had one son, Ernest who with his wife Jean, lives in Murriete, California.

Elsie came from a large family of twelve children, brother Ozrow born on January 7, 1903; sister Bardella Amelia, born on April 6, 1904; sister Lucinda Mary, born on November 2, 1905; sister Nola Irene, born on May 23, 1907; brother Otto Camble, born on January 3, 1909; brother Warren Ernest, born on November 12, 1910; sister Jeneva, born on October 25, 1914; brother Frankie J., born on March 20, 1919; brother Calvin J., born on October 17, 1920; brother Kenneth Wendell, born on February 8, 1923; and sister Zoe, born on February 11, 1927.

Elsie died in the Beaver City hospital, of a brain tumor, on June 21, 1997 at the age of 84. Elsie's husband Porter (Thel) Martin, died in Beaver City on September 10, 2002 at the age of 86.

Elsie was known for her early morning walks. She would usually drive to the access road at the south end of Beaver and walk for an hour toward the foothills and back.

BEAVER – Funeral services for Ernest A. Shipp, 56, Beaver resident, who died Sunday at 5 a.m. in a Salt Lake City hospital of pneumonia following an operation a week ago for gall bladder infection are being planned for Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Beaver L.D.S. West ward chapel under the direction of Bishop Wesley W. Farrer. Interment will be in Mountain View cemetery.

Mr. Shipp was born in Beaver, March 22, 1872, a son of Charles F. and Jeanette Campbell Shipp. He married Irene Gale of Beaver, June 19, 1903, in the Manti temple. He had lived in Beaver most of his life. At the time of his death he was superintendent of the Beaver West ward Sunday school, which position he had held for many years. Previous to this he served as stake superintendent of Sunday schools for many years. He had been active in other church activities.

He is survived by his mother of Baker, Ore.; 10 sons and daughters, Mrs. Bardella Thorley, Cedar City; Mrs. Cinda Dean, Mrs. Nola Beaumont, Mrs. Geneva Gillies; Mrs. Elsie Martin, Ozrow, Warren, Otto, Frankie and Calvin Shipp, Beaver; 12 grandchildren, two brothers, one sister, John Shipp, Provo; Frank Shipp, Baker, Ore., and Mrs. Merle Morin, McEwan, Ore. Mrs. Shipp died eight years ago.

Obituary for Elsie's mother Irene "Elsie" Gale

"Final Tribute Paid to Beloved Mother"

Beautiful and impressive were the services held on Tuesday, February 15 for Mrs. Elsie Gale Shipp, beloved wife of Ernest A. Ship, who passed away at the Milford hospital on the 11th, leaving a highly respected family to mourn her untimely demise.

Bishop Wesley Farred was in charge. The chapel was filled with friends and relatives who mourn the passing of the deceased. The beautiful casket was banked with a profusion of flowers which bore silent evidence of the love and esteem of a host of friends.

Former Bishop George Palce was the first speaker. He said he had been an intimate neighbor for many years and new of the many beautiful traits of character of Mrs. Shipp, and told of her true devotion to her family and her religion.

She was described as a quiet, unassuming woman, truly devoted to her family. She ruled by love and kindness, and in her noble life were many things we might well emulate. Former Bishop George Parkinson told of the pure life of Mrs. Ship as a young girl, having observed how carefully she had tried to protect herself from sin.

He spoke consoling words to the bereaved family and exhorted the daughters to follow in the footsteps of their mother.

Elsie Gale Shipp was born in Beaver on December 7, 1882. She was the daughter of Henry and Hannah Gale. On June 19, 1901, she was married to Ernest A. Shipp in the Manti temple. Except for temporary absences at Kimberly and Newhouse, her entire life had been spent here. Always devoted to service to her religion, Mrs. Shipp had served as secretary to the Primary association, assistant secretary in the Relief Society, secretary in the Sunday school, and a Sunday school teacher.

Well and nobly has she fulfilled her mission to earth, becoming the mother of twelve children to whose comfort and requirements she gave unstintingly of her service and love. Surviving besides the husband, a sister and one brother, are the following children: Ozrow, Bardella, Cinda, Nola, Otto, Warren, Elsie, Jeneva, Franke, Calvin, Kenneth Wendall (deceased), and Zoe, the new-born infant.
